How Long Does PCB Prototyping Take?
Lead time is the question we hear most before an order. In short: standard prototyping takes about 5-7 working days, and rush service can be done in as little as 24 hours. Actual time depends on layer count, surface finish and material—details below.
PCB Prototyping Lead Time by Layer Count
Reference lead times at Shinly International. Standard orders are scheduled for cost efficiency; rush orders are prioritized. All times are in working days, excluding holidays.
| Board Type / Layers | Standard | Rush |
|---|---|---|
| Single / Double-sided (1-2 layers) | 4-5 working days | As fast as 24h |
| 4-layer multilayer | 5-6 working days | As fast as 48h |
| 6-8 layer multilayer | 6-8 working days | As fast as 72h |
| 10+ layer multilayer | 8-12 working days | By assessment |
| FPCB / Rigid-Flex | 7-10 working days | By assessment |
* Actual lead time depends on board thickness, surface finish, impedance requirements and current capacity. Please confirm with our sales team before ordering.
What Affects Prototyping Lead Time?
Layer count & structure
More layers mean more lamination, drilling and alignment steps, extending lead time. Rigid-flex boards typically add 2-4 days over rigid boards of the same layer count.
Surface finish
Lead-free HASL and OSP are faster; ENIG and ENEPIG require extra chemical processes, adding 1-2 working days.
Material availability
FR-4 is stocked and does not affect lead time; high-frequency materials (e.g. Rogers), special thicknesses or copper weights may require procurement time.
Impedance control
Impedance-controlled boards need stackup simulation and coupon verification first, usually adding about 1 day.
File completeness
The most overlooked yet most impactful factor. Missing layers, mismatched drill files or unspecified thickness/finish cause back-and-forth during CAM review and delay production.
3 Ways to Shorten Your PCB Lead Time
- 1Provide complete files up front: Gerber (with NC Drill), stackup, thickness, copper weight, surface finish, soldermask color, quantity and target date—avoiding engineering back-and-forth.
- 2Confirm DRC / DFM: Running design rule checks before ordering greatly reduces rejections caused by manufacturing constraints.
- 3State rush needs clearly: If time-critical, note your target date at order so we can evaluate a rush slot rather than standard scheduling.
FAQ
Q1. What is the fastest PCB prototype turnaround?+
1-2 layer boards as fast as 24h; 4-layer 48h; 6-8 layer 72h. Rush orders require advance confirmation of capacity and fees.
Q2. Does lead time start from order or from file approval?+
Lead time starts the day CAM review passes and files are confirmed. If files need correction, it restarts after the fix.
Q3. Is there a surcharge for rush orders?+
Yes. Rush orders require slotting and capacity reallocation, with a fee based on layer count and urgency.
Q4. Is mass production lead time the same as prototyping?+
No. Production adds procurement and line scheduling—typically 2-4 weeks depending on quantity and board type.
